Have you ever tried to do something that seemed impossible?
Something you just didn’t think you could do.
Maybe it was something you REALLY wanted but couldn’t figure out how to get to it.
I was watching a movie based on one of my favourite books the other day – The Dark Tower, by Stephen King.
Stephen King has a frighteningly dark imagination, but somehow, he always makes the impossible real.
That’s what being creative is all about. It’s about making the unreal, the impossible and the unbelievable into reality.
And watching the movie, I saw it…
It’s the power of focus.
When you truly want something, you must focus on that. That one thing.
It has to be the only thing in your head, and then it becomes…
In the movie, Roland (the Gunslinger) needs to make an impossible shot to rescue Jake. So, he stops everything else he’s doing. He stops thinking about the enemies around him, or the screams of the dying, the destruction of the town, and listens.
He listens past the distractions. Past the drip of his blood, and even the beat of his own heart.
He stops still and listens to what’s important.
He decides what matters to him.
For Roland what matters is saving a boy.
What’s important to me is making art that expresses the dreams and stories in my head. I want to get them out where I can see them more clearly. For me clarity comes when the vision is brought into the physical world.
We all get to decide what matters most to us, and when we focus on that one thing, we make it real.
You might make it real by writing, like Stephen King.
Or you might love to create 3-D sculptures from clay, or felted animations like Andrea Love from @andreaanimates.
Roland from The Dark Tower makes it real by focusing on the words of the Gunslingers.
And what seems impossible, becomes reality.
Words like impossible and never don’t happen for the hero’s in these books. But there are plenty of real-world examples too, where unbelievable is just a word. People who change the world because they focus on what matters most to them and find a way to bring it to life.
Being still and listening to yourself is the step most of us miss. We spend so much time (I do anyway) doing that we forget what we truly want and why.
So, I want to encourage you, as the Blue Lady reminds me, to Be Still and Listen.
My power comes when I focus. I focus best when I have clarity. I gain clarity when I listen to the voice inside, that tells me what I really want.
I make the best art when I put all of this together.
